I think they should do stories about other species. Something like Arrival could lend itself to the Trek universe and that was like $47mill budget.Įven something like A Quiet Place ($17mill budget) could be Trek-ish - an away team mission gone wrong, stranded on a planet and they've gotta keep quiet.

A similar story could be set in the Trek universe for half the cost. That was $150mill cos of them shooting on open water. Master and Commander is often said to feel Star Trek-ish. It doesn't need to some huge blockbuster. But I don't think they should be spending $100mill+ on a Trek movie. And that may come down to Beyond's reception at the box office. So you either do a 4th Kelvin universe movie with that cast, or you do it with Hemsworth - Paramount weren't willing to pay for both. But also, all the other cast members would be seeing big pay bumps with the 4th movie. And Paramount being Paramount, thought they could just pay Pine what he got for Beyond. I wouldn't say Paramount balked at paying Pine what he was due for Star Trek 4, it's that they also wanted Chris Hemsworth in it and his price tag isn't cheap. This is all a digression to say: Paramount just didn’t want to act like Trek was a thing and the CBS split was a true stumbling block but Paramount never even tried. They even hit the adult market with stuff like Rogue One, the family market with the sequel trilogy, and the kid market with so many animated shows with enough substance to cross over into adult fandom. For better or worse, Disney knew that parents would want to share Star Wars with their kids and that they needed to market it as much to fans as to a broader audience. Paramount couldn’t manage this massive tent pole franchise with massive commercial value and utterly failed to see it as something parents would want to share and pass down to their kids. The problem is that even Trek and sci-fi fans didn’t even KNOW Beyond was coming out and even fans of the Kelvin Universe movies were turned off by hamfisted early advertising that tried to emphasize there being a motorcycle for 10 minutes rather than the quintessential Trekiness of the plot. Paramount utterly failed to market Star Trek and balked at paying Chris Pine his asking salary and basically killed Star Trek 4–movies which were commercially viable.
